Brass is a copper alloy of copper and zinc (up to 40%) and has been used for hardware components since the Baroque period. Other metals can be added in smaller proportions to give cast or wrought alloys certain properties. The rich yellow colour and the possibility of polishing the surface to a high gloss have contributed to the popularity of this material.
